What Is The Big Garden Birdwatch?
The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch involves around half a million people annually looking out for the wildlife in their garden or local park. The findings are used by the RSPB to monitor trends and compare wildlife data year-on-year and were even able to alert the RSPB to the declining number of song thrushes in our gardens!
When Is It Happening?
Registration for the Big Garden Birdwatch opens 9th December 2020, while the event takes place 29th – 31st January 2021.
What’s Involved?
Once you have registered, taking part is simple:
1) Within the allocated three days, find one hour to sit and watch the wildlife in your garden or local park.
2) Count the birds that land in your garden or local park, ignoring those that just fly over. To avoid counting the same bird twice, it’s best to record the highest number of each bird species that you see at one time.
3) Send your findings to the RSPB!
You can submit your findings online or by post between January 29th and February 19th.
Don’t worry if you don’t have much to report, as knowing which birds aren’t around is just as important! To give the RSPB a clearer picture of how your local wildlife is coping, you can also take note of other wildlife you see, such as hedgehogs, squirrels and frogs.
